sleepless poem

i don't know
 what it was like, the
smell of dark waves and
wet wood,
beneath
wind's screaming

smiling softly
slept the Master of
shore and water
stars and voids

were they cold?
rain  pouring
off heads, beards,
sail and hearts
thumping

it says they were afraid.
the promise of safer days
lost to white
panic - of
the worst kinds of
what?
terror? pain? loneliness?

we know
that they cried
out into pelting water

We know He woke

stilled everything
back to horizon,
night air
bats feeding
stars.

[Peace
is
this man]

**

tonight though,
I'm interested in that sleep
that did not need
wind
to cease.
