Fullness

Oh God of paradoxes that are not
Oh mighty king came low and soft
Oh God of fear and God of love
Of justice and mercy both.
Amen
Amen
Amen
Make us unafraid and strong
Make us abiding and weak
Makes us one, yet set apart
Let us know You,
and know then
How to hold and also defend
How to wound and also heal
How to seek and also find
Let us be full humans
Let us be more than our ideals
However bright and beautiful
Let us live
inside
Your
shadow
Here on earth

downsizing

That house held my grief
and it held
my joy.

A hundred, thousand times

I was a second grader in that house.
Laying in the sun with the dogs.
Mom helped me find the best
and biggest seed for my class project:
an Avacado pit.

The kitchen was filled with sun
Mom laughed one night
pointing to all the cupboards
I'd leave open. Year later, she apologized.
"You are just different than me. I celebrate that."

There was the dining room with the china
Jess and I would threaten to fight over.
Each year when mom served lasagna for Thanksgiving
And rolls that were burnt until about 1999
When there was almost always
someone extra at the table.

The family room with the old grey couch cushions
that you could push back, and slither your way
into the small cavern left by the fold-out mattress.
The white carpet the dogs stained with food coloring
and the green one that I used to lay on and talk
while the Buckeye game played overhead,
Surprised to feel so
able
to rest

We all sat around tables:
the heavy wood one
Jess cried about in elementary school,
The glass topped one
we sat around years later, sipping beer,
eating fondue and baby carrots
And that celebrated perennial cheese dip
My brother's red-haired girlfriend
became his wife. My sister told stories.
We laughed. We lived
the way you do
when you are sitting in a kitchen
that has always been there.

I had two rooms. One, the setting for slumber parties:
white furniture and the carpet I first learned to pray on,
pressing my face into the roughness. Then, the basement. Cool and dark,
during transition seasons after college, between jobs

It's the place I first remember
knowing how to be me there
in that house,
standing within the Embrace.

And there are bad memories and sad ones.
Many many. The yelling years. The accusing.
Fear-filled prayers and over-washed hands and sideways
love that pulled and used and was never satisfied.
(We would lose part
of ourselves to deny these things.
I don't want to deny them.)

I want, instead, to tell you
about the time, last year
I was able to come home
fresh from a breakup, and tired
and go for a walk
with my mother and sister
along a new path mom showed us
And how we took pictures there, my sister and I
Silhouetted against grey clouds
and I felt, somehow, healed
or healing at least,
Because I was home.

What I want to say is, that when my parents signed over
that house last week,
I lost a lot. We all did.

The pine trees besides the driveway. The deck at night.
The cool air and the rain and ruts in snow and the warm deck and the stars.
That part of the yard we all stood in on our last night
just because we never really stand there, the bonfire in the distance.
The thousand thousand seasons and loves and friends and ideas
and hopes and forgivenesses and hurts and healings. God
you were with us. You were with us.

Mornings when I emerged to Dale on the deck
a crossword and his coffee,
My past in my present and my heart newer
softer. Willing. Forgiven.

God thank you.

So we had also gained
I think we should plant a flag. Erect some stones.
Kill the fattened calf. Say thank you.
Thank you
Thank you.
For our lives. For healing. For forgiveness
for hope.

It's interesting that
 I, in my third decade,
felt like I have actually lost
a place I called
"home"

And that
is something.

Ireland Narnia

This is what we've done
For ages
We've lived in our places
And loved them
And God was with us

(It's not about blaming
It's not about aquitting
It's about trusting Christ
Who knows me
as I love Him)

Take a deep breath.
look around.
You once
were a child here

Like these woods,
We are green
And smiling at
Blue sky

Friday Afternoon After the Busses Leave

People walk around me
Alive and working
Out their days

I want to tell
them
there
Is still a crater
Inside me

Sometimes it even
Feels bigger
Than it was
Before

I want to ask
Them to look
In my eyes
And say
"You're normal.
You're normal.
You're normal."

That he was wrong
When he told me
It was fine,
It had all worked out
Anyway. The school
My job. Just because
Goodness exists
Doesn't mean
Craters
Dont.

"You're normal."
I want them to see
And say
"It is so
Broken.

It is.

Go ahead
And cry."

six months

It's spring now,
again.
I am hollowed
The part of me
that trusted
you, that leaned
and let its roots, branches grow
into you
is broken off
and I am left
bereft. Hollow.
I feel the edges
with my fingers
trying to make sense.

Hollow me out
I face the day
it seems emptier now
than the one months ago.
When
you dug yourself out, up.

I had been so rooted through
that I spent six months
expecting you
all moments.
Your car would be outside
you'd show up at school
Oh God.
I wanted
I waited
all these unfulfilled hopes
I just didn't think
it could really happen
this way

Love,
I thought,
I think still, despite all
Should not end.

But here I am
on the edge of this hole
now dry, crumbling

still waiting
somehow
for your absence to go.

Simultaneously
I hold
my heart and whisper
"Don't hide. Don't protect.
Let it hurt long and hard as it needs,
(longer, it seems, than many will expect)
But- Dear God- keep refusing
to resurrect those old old walls-

that took decades
and His kindness
to dismantle.

To do this
we must trust
that, in this hole-ripping world,
we
are not
our greatest protector.

The martyrs of old offered
themselves freely
They did so
as the Beloved
of God

The answer to the violence
that can (and does) rip through us
is protection, after all
Just not the one
we think.

I must remember- vulnerability
is not just about exposure
or sacrifice. No.

in the end
This is about
laying down our weapons,
small and fragile,
Then running
to the Strong Tower
We're all adults here
There's no need to assign blame
Let's not let our emotions run
Away from us

And I understand why beyonce wants
To write songs about
Taking revenge
We all maybe do

Because, what I feel sometimes
Is that I don't want to be an adult
I want to be a kid who is allowed
To fight back.

I want you, or him, or the others
To stand up and scream out
On my behalf. To say "stop!
You can't do this to her! You were wrong!!"

But instead we are all adults
We sigh and look at our hands
And say reasonable things

It makes sense why beyonce's song is
So angry. We hurt deep. We bleed out.

But it won't help.
Revenge is instinct, dark and insidious
We rear back, throw the punch
from the heart's breaking.

But It won't help
It won't help
It never helps

Lord, God... help me see
What Jesus sees.
Help me trust
What Jesus trusts

Help me worry less
About looking holy and more
About becoming, wearing
Dependant holiness

Let me have an answer
For the anger

And, someday,
a song in the night

My Portion

Sorrow
(Unlike fear)
Is a grace because
At least
You can own it

Once you learn
To recognize
Its presence
like an old friend,
You can open
The door
You can put the kettle
On the stove
and settle in
To hear stories
of this love's ache
told
softly,
gently

together let us
sleep
and wake
freshly broken
freshly watching

for God
Who (still)
sees us

What Love Is... part 2

Carrie said
Sometimes
The ultimate way to love
Someone
Is to let them leave

Megan said
This is God's way
Harsh and beautiful
That Hell is love's
Release: The chance
To refuse.

I said
Sometimes I'd rather
He force it
Would that really
Be so bad
For us?

Megan said,
(With such compassion)
You aren't
Thinking
about
What it's like
To be chosen

I have always known
How to find you
And what it feels like.

As the years have passed
I have learned many things :
There are others out there
Who experience you in other ways
There is a world of knowledge
Possessed by men and women
Who are not me
The world is bigger
And I am smaller
Than I once knew about

But You...
You are still my same friend
You show up, in the complexity
The same one
Who walked me to the restroom in the middle of the night at summer camp
The same one who waited above ohio corn
The one who cried through the eyes of my friend
The one who pursues me
Still.

Just because I know more now
Doesn't mean I knew less then

Glory. God
Thank you

for hiding from the wise
and revealing to the little ones
